A lone injured Borg, named Hugh by Geordi, develops individuality; Picard abandons a plan to use him to destroy the Collective, and Hugh chooses to return to the Borg.

• Follows Best Of Both Worlds, part 1 (S03E26): Picard, taken as Locutus in part 1, first refuses to treat Hugh as a person, then plays Locutus to test him.
• Leads to Descent, part 1 (S06E26): Hugh, sent back to the Borg in I, Borg, may explain why the Borg act as individuals; Picard defends the decision.
